Windows Server 2019 Standard is the successor to Windows Server 2016. It’s suitable for many infrastructure scenarios and workloads like Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SharePoint. It enhances threat protection beyond Windows Server 2016, with virtual machines (VMs) designed to safeguard sensitive software. Linux VMs are also supported, and administrators can encrypt network segments between servers with ease.
A new addition is Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), offering preventative defense against attacks and zero-day exploits while enabling centralized management of the entire security cycle.
Windows Server 2019 allows hybrid scenarios with Project Honolulu, a management tool introduced in 2017. It lets existing Windows Server environments integrate seamlessly with cloud services like Azure Backup, Disaster Recovery, and Azure File Sync. Project Honolulu provides a unified interface for managing servers (2019, 2016, or 2012R2) with or without a GUI, simplifying tasks such as performance monitoring and setup.
Developers can modernize applications with container technology. Windows Server 2019 reduces server core base container image sizes by up to two-thirds, cutting download times by around 72%. It supports Kubernetes and improves Hyperconverged Infrastructures (HCI) with preconfigured solutions for storage and compute, all manageable through Project Honolulu for simplified operations.
Windows Server 2019 can be used as a Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH), allowing Windows apps or desktops to be shared among users. New memory management functions include Storage Migration Services (SMS), which upgrade old file servers by transferring data, access rights, and settings — even migrating the server identity to a new machine. The included Storage Replica feature, previously exclusive to the Datacenter Edition, enables block-based replication between servers and clusters.
Lastly, Windows Server 2019 reintroduces a graphical interface, a feature many users missed from the 2016 version.
